.28- Gehling, Genevieve Mary (Reinart)  (1920-2005)

(The Colorado Springs, Colorado,  Gazette, 18 Feb 2005)

Genevieve Mary Reinart Gehling, 85, a resident of Colorado since 1982, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Cedarwood Health Care Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Genevieve was born February 19, 1920 to Peter and Mary Reinart on their farm four and a half miles southwest of Halbur, Iowa. She attended St. Augustine's Catholic School in Halbur. On October 28, 1937, she was married to Lawrence Gehling from the nearby town of Carroll, Iowa. For the first ten years of their married life the newlyweds rented a series of farms in Carroll, Humboldt, and Pocahontas counties. Along the way, Genevieve gave birth to four sons and three daughters.

In 1946, Genevieve and her husband quit farming and moved their family to town. They spent most of their remaining years together in Gilmore City, Iowa where Genevieve worked first as a caregiver for several local families and then as an aide in a nearby retirement center. During the late 1970's Genevieve also found time to pursue her interest in family genealogy. She not only wrote down her own personal memoirs, but also researched the many branches of the Herman Gehling line of descendants.

After the death of her husband in 1982, Genevieve moved to Colorado Springs to be nearer to the families of her children. She soon busied herself in organizing family outings, learning china and landscape painting, piecing together quilts, and embroidering pillowcases. Genevieve spent the last four years of her life at the Cedarwood Health Care Center in Colorado Springs where she continued to work on her pillowcases and greeting cards until the very end. Everyone who knew her will always remember her shy, but warm, smile and the unfailing positive attitude that was her trademark. She leaves behind the enduring image of a gentle, loving woman who enjoyed nothing so much as the company of her family and friends.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Gehling; daughter, Lois Mulroney; and her two sons: Donald Gehling and Thomas Gehling. She is survived by two sisters: Mary Buccholz of Jasper, Indiana, and Bertille Thielen of Manning, Iowa; by two daughters: Connie Bachoroski of Colorado Springs and Bonnie Clark of Rolfe, Iowa; by two sons: Richard Gehling and Charles Gehling, both of Colorado Springs; by 15 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Died - Nicholas Wernimont, of paralysis, aged 82 years, 11 months and ten days.

Deceased was born in Luxemburg in the year 1805.  He emigrated to America in 1853 and located at Port Washington, Wis., where he engageg in the business of farming.  After following this occupation for four years he moved to Dubuque and engaged in the mercantile business as peddlar and for many years he drove a wagon from Dubuque through the open country, which at that time was a mere wilderness as far as Prairieburg.  In this business he was quite successful and in after years he purchased a farm in Whitewater township, Dubuque county, and again turned his attention to farming.  Becoming aged and infirm he disposed of his farm about six years ago and since then has resided with his son, Henry, a farmer living three miles north of town.

He was the father of six sons, John, Theodore, Nicholas, Henry, George and Michael, all of whom survive to mourn his loss.  His wife, Mary Anna, died about five years ago.  The funeral services took place at the Sacred Heart Church in this city last Friday.  His remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery where they now rest.

71- Wernimont, Anne Marie (Schortgen)  (1804-1883)

(Monticello Express for 16 August 1883):

"Mrs. Wernimont was born in Belgium, Province of Luxembourg, and emigrated to America 30 years ago. She has lived 26 years in Iowa. She was the mother of six sons, all of whom are still living...Mr. Nick Wernimont, husband of deceased, also survives her, being two years her junior, and is in the enjoyment of a hale old age. Mrs. Wernimont was a devout and consistent Catholic, and was buried last Saturday with the impressive rites of that Church. The funeral services were largely attended, and the procession that followed the remains to the Catholic cemetery on the south bank of the Maqoketa river, was one of the largest that ever moved out of Monticello.  Another tired traveler has reached the end of her journey. The day has been long, and the road many times toilsome and weary, but at last she has found rest."

76- Wernimont, Henry  (1842-1913)

(The Monticello, Iowa, Express, October 16, 1913)

Death of Henry Wernimont

Henry Wenimont, a well known and respected resident of Lovell township, died at noon, Tuesday, October 14, after an illness of twelve weeks, at the age of 71 years, nine months, 14 days.

Mr. Wernimont realized at the outset of his illness that his trouble, akin to Bright' disease, was incurable, and therefore he put his house in readiness and prepared for the long journey into eternity.  He was at the home of his son, Frank, in Monticello, during his sickness.  He sent for his children one by one, and gave them, individually, the advice he wished to convey to them, and before his death all nine of them were present.  He expressed satisfaction, and passed away as the angelus was ringing in the belfry of the church he loved so well.

Henry Wernimont was born in Luxembourg, Germany, January 1, 1842.  He was brought to the United States by his parents, when he was nine years old.  They lived short years of time in Wisconsin and Illinois, and when Henry was 16 years old removed to Dubuque.  He taught school in Dubuque county.  He often accompanied his father, who was a transient trader, in his trips about the country, and it was on one such journey into Jones county that he met Miss Anna Kohout, a resident of Monticello township, whom he married in 1865.  After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Wernimont lived in Dubuque and afterwards at Fillmore.  In 1874 they acquired the Kobout homestead, and moved to Monticello township.   There Mr. Wernimont engaged in farming until the removal of the family to Monticello in 1893.  After the death of Mrs. Wernimont, Mr. Wernimont returned to Lovell township, and spent much time in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Oswald.  For 20 years he was the assessor of Lovell township.

Mr. Wernimont leaves many friends.  He had a high sense of duty.  It was that quality among others that made him a regular attendant of the Catholic church, of which he had been a faithful member from his youth.  The same sense of duty made him a conscientious official, careful and painstaking in every detail.  He was a useful citizen who always took a positive interest in the things that he thought would make the community better and its people more contented.

A SUDDEN SUMMONS

Mrs. Henry Wernimont Dies, After an Illness of Only Six Hours - A Sad Affair.

Mrs. Henry Wernimont died last Friday afternoon, at four o'clock, after a brief illness.  Up to ten o'clock of that day she was as well as ever.  At that hour, while talking with her son-in-law, Mr. John B. Oswald, she complained that she felt as though she was going to faint.  She was assisted to a resting place, where she showed immediate symptoms of violent illness.  Her son, Henry G. Wernimont, who was below, in the store, was called, and he immediately summoned a physician.  He hurried to his mother's side.  She threw her arms about his neck  with the remark, "My dear boy," and that was the last conscious remark she made.  The physician pronounced the disease apoplexy of the brain.  It yielded to no treatment, and in a few hours the good woman breathed her last.

Particularly distressing was the fact that her husband, Mr. Henry Wernimont, had that morning gone to West Bend on a visit to Mr. William Cline, an old time friend and neighbor.  He left his wife in as good health as ever that morning at 6:30 o'clock.  That evening, before he had been at Mr. Cline's home twenty minutes he received a telegram announcing her death.  The shock was so great, and he was so prostrated by the news, that Mr. Cline accompanied him home.  They reached here Saturday morning at 8 o'clock.

Mrs. Wernimont's maiden name was Anna Kohout.  She was born in Bohemia, February 5th, 1846.  She came to the United States with her parents, when seven years of age, and settled in this township, on the farm that was her home nearly forty years - until she moved to Monticello with her husband two and a half years ago.  December 27th, 1865, she was married to Mr. Henry Wernimont, and the result of that happy union was ten children, nine of whom are living, and who were privileged to be with their mother during her last hours.  These children are Henry G., the adjuster for the Dubuque Fire and Marine Insurance Co.; Mrs. John B. Oswald of this township, and the following who are living at home: Joseph, Katie, Martha, Frank, John, Charlie and Anna.  The youngest is three years of age.

Mrs. Wernimont was an honest, hard-working mother of good mind, who transmitted her mental qualities to her childsren, and who trained them unto habits of sobrietyindustry and good behavior.  Her life was devoted to them and her husband.  She rejoiced in their successes and never lost the touch of sympathy which cemented them as a family.  She had a strong religious  nature and was fervent in her devotions as a member of the Catholic church.

The funeral services were held at the church of the Sacred Heart, last Monday afternoon.  Rev John  solemnized mass, and delivered a thoughtful and well spoken eulogy, full of comfort for those who live up to the requirements of the Christian religion.  He praised Mrs. Wernimont as a wife and mother, and as tian woman.  The friends of the family who gathjered to render their last tributes of respect, were so numerous that many of them were unable to gain admittance to the lkarge church.  The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery on the banks of the Maquoketa river, north of town.
